Position Description

St. David's South Austin Medical Center is currently seeking a full-time experienced Physician Assistant to work at a busy Level II Trauma Center in Austin, TX. The Trauma Service comprises of Seven Surgical Critical Care/Trauma fellowship surgeons and five Advanced Practice Providers based at a community hospital seeing approximately 3000 patients/year. We have a dedicated Shock Trauma ICU, Trauma Care Unit, and a medical-surgical floor.

Preferred:

The ideal candidate is an advanced practice provider with surgical first assist experience as well as 2-5 years' experience in trauma or surgical care.

More about the position:

I. Position Summary:

The Trauma Advanced Practice Provider (APP) is an integral member of the health care team and participates in all clinical, educational, and quality improvement activities of Trauma Services. The APP provides direct patient care to trauma/surgical patients throughout the hospital course of treatment and post discharge follow up, in accordance with the statutory limitations established for their specialty. As an extension of the trauma program, the APP is held accountable to the standards of care set forth by the American College of Surgeons, under the direction of the Trauma Medical Director/Trauma Program Director, and collaborates with all multidisciplinary team members to optimize the care provided to the patient population served at South Austin Medical Center.

II. Position Requirements:
A. Licensure/Certification/Registration: Licensed as a Physician Assistant/ARNP in the state of Texas, BLS, ACLS, PALS required. ATLS, within the first 6 months to 1 year. Surgical First Assist preferred.
B. Education: Graduation from an accredited school with successful completion of an approved PA program.
C. Experience: Two to five years of current experience preferred in specialty area of trauma and/or surgery with first assist in the OR.
D. Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Other Attributes: Great interpersonal and communication skills. Demonstrates clinical expertise, leadership, and teaching in patient care. Must be able to place central lines, arterial lines, chest tubes, etc.

III. Degree of Supervision Required:

Involves general guidance and direction by surgeons and department director. The employee will be expected to perform most job duties independently and in accordance with established specialty guidelines, departmental and hospital policies and procedures. Clinical practice under the direction of the Surgeon caring for the patient, in accordance with the statutory limitations established for their specialty and per KRMC medical bylaws.

IV. Physical Requirements:

Requires corrected hearing and vision to enable employee to meet performance standards. Requires frequent bending, reaching, squatting, kneeling, moving, lifting of patients and/or equipment, and sufficient manual dexterity to operate therapeutic equipment. Must be able to stand for long periods at a time. Good mental and physical health to work for long periods of time in a highly stressful atmosphere is required. Occasionally push/pull up to fifty (50) pounds, occasionally lift/carry up to fifty (50) pounds.

V. Ages of Patients Served:
This position requires competence in assessment, treatment, and/or care for the age groups indicated. The employee must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care, based on physical, psycho/social, educational, safety, and related criteria, appropriate to the age of the patients served in his/her assigned service area. The skills and knowledge needed to provide such care may be gained through education, training, or experience.
